Is There an Association Between Gum Disease and Diabetes?

For the nearly 24 million Americans that have diabetes, many may be surprised to learn about an unexpected complication associated with this condition. Research shows that there is an increased prevalence of gum disease among those with diabetes, adding serious gum disease to the list of other complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, stroke and kidney disease.

If I Have Diabetes, am I at Risk for Dental Problems?

 

If your blood glucose levels are poorly controlled, you are more likely to develop serious gum disease and lose more teeth than non-diabetics. Like all infections, serious gum disease may be a factor in causing blood sugar to rise and may make diabetes harder to control.

Other oral problems associated to diabetes include: thrush, an infection caused by fungus that grows in the mouth, and dry mouth which can cause soreness, ulcers, infections and cavities.

How Can I Help Prevent Dental Problems Associated with Diabetes?

First and foremost, control your blood glucose level. Then, take good care of your teeth and gums, along with regular checkups every six months. To control thrush, a fungal infection, maintain good diabetic control, avoid smoking and, if you wear them, remove and clean dentures daily. Good blood glucose control can also help prevent or relieve dry mouth caused by diabetes.

Halloween is COMING!

What do you do with all of the "EXTRA" candy your kids receive?

Here are some suggestions: 

              SNICKERS® - APPLE SALAD

1 (8 oz.) container Cool Whip
3 apples, diced
3 regular size SNICKERS® candy bars, frozen
Mix together the Cool Whip and apples. Smash the SNICKERS® bars and add to the salad. Best if you allow to stand for a little while before serving

Milky Way Bundt Cake

10 (2.1 ounce size) Milky Way candy bars
1 3/8 cup butter
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
2 1/2 cups flour
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

DIRECTIONS:

In microwave or double boiler, melt 7 Milky Way candy bars with 1/2 cup butter. Stir until smooth, and set aside to cool.

In a large bowl, cream sugar and 1/2 cup softened butter or margarine until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing after each addition.

In another bowl, whisk together flour and soda. Add flour mixture and buttermilk alternately to creamed mixture, ending with the flour mixture. Stir in candy mixture and vanilla until well blended.

Grease and flour a Bundt pan to within an inch of the top of the pan. It is very important not to grease and flour clear to the top; it will run over, make an awful mess in your oven, and the cake will fall.

Bake at 325 degrees F for about 60 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in cake comes out dry.

Melt 3 Milky Way candy bars with 3/8 cup butter or margarine. Pour glaze over top of the cake, and let it run down the sides. Sprinkle with chopped nuts if desired

Or just do what I do, take the "non Halloween" labeled candy and save it for Christmas stockings and Easter baskets!!!
